At Black Hammock Farm, we prioritize providing a high-quality, personalized experience that truly connects you to the land and the animals. To ensure every visitor has the opportunity to learn, engage, and fully enjoy their time, we limit each U-Pick It day to just 8 exclusive groups of 4 people. This allows us to focus on education and interaction, offering hands-on guidance as you pick your eggs and learn about sustainable farming practices. By keeping the experience intimate, we ensure it’s not only memorable but also enriching, with plenty of time for questions, storytelling, and connection. Spots fill up quickly, so reserve yours today and be part of this unique opportunity to experience the best of farm life!

Year-Round Egg Access — Beyond U-Pick It

For Oviedo and Black Hammock residents who want regular access to fresh eggs year-round, we run a separate, members-only program outside of U-Pick It pickup days. It's self-serve, self-regulated, and built on neighborhood trust: drop by the farm whenever you need eggs, take what's in the refrigerator, and leave payment behind. Venmo, Cash App, or cash — whichever works for you. There's no fixed price; it functions more as a donation that supports the farm's ongoing research, heritage breed program, and stewardship of the land than as a transaction. Eggs go on a first-come, first-served basis, so the cooler is fullest early in the week and lightest before pickup days.

Access is by approval only. To be added to the list, fill out the form below. We approve neighbors and members of the Black Hammock community on a rolling basis — once you're on the list, you're set.

Frequently Asked Questions About U-Pick It Eggs

Real answers about picking up fresh eggs at the farm.

When can I pick up eggs and how do I know what's available?

We open the farm for U-Pick It pickup on scheduled days throughout the week — typically Friday and Saturday mornings, with additional weekday windows during peak laying season. Availability varies week to week depending on flock production. Check our current schedule on this page, follow updates through BHF News, or call ahead to confirm. We hold reserved dozens for repeat customers who let us know they're coming.

How much do farm fresh eggs cost at Black Hammock Farm?

Pricing reflects what it actually costs to raise pasture-managed laying hens in Florida — feed, bedding, predator-proof housing, and the time to move the flock to fresh ground. Our eggs are priced competitively with other Central Florida pasture-raised egg producers and well below specialty grocery prices for comparable quality. Exact pricing is posted at pickup; we keep it simple — no membership, no subscription, no minimum order. Consider it more of a donation than a transaction.

How fresh are the eggs when I pick them up?

Most eggs in our coolers were laid within the last one to four days. Eggs in unwashed shells (the way we sell them) keep their natural protective bloom and stay fresh on the counter for two weeks or in the fridge for two to three months. Compare that to grocery-store eggs, which are often four to six weeks old at the point of sale — and shelf-stable for far less time after.

Do I need a reservation or can I just show up?

Drop-ins are welcome during posted pickup windows. Reservations are recommended if you want a specific quantity (two or more dozen) or if you're coming from outside Oviedo — we'll set them aside for you so a long drive doesn't end in an empty cooler. Reservations also let us tell you ahead if production is low that week so you can plan accordingly.

Do I need to bring anything to pick up eggs?

Bring a cooler or insulated bag if you're driving more than 30 minutes home, especially in summer — eggs travel fine without refrigeration short-term, but Florida heat in a closed car is hard on any food. Cash and major cards are both accepted at pickup. Cartons are provided, though we welcome you bringing back used cartons for reuse — it saves us money and packaging.

How should I store farm fresh eggs at home?

If the eggs are unwashed (the way we sell them), they can sit on a counter for up to two weeks because the natural bloom on the shell protects against bacteria. Once washed, eggs must be refrigerated and used within a few weeks. Most customers refrigerate from the start to be safe — refrigerated unwashed eggs keep two to three months. Always store pointy-end down to keep yolks centered.

Are the eggs always brown, or do you have different colors?

Our flock includes multiple heritage breeds, so the egg basket on any given pickup day usually has a mix — brown eggs from Black Australorps and Brahmas, dark chocolate-brown eggs from Black Copper Marans, and white eggs from Leghorns. Egg color comes from the breed of hen, not from diet or quality. Nutritionally and culinarily, a brown egg and a white egg are the same — the variety is for fun.

What happens when the flock isn't producing — like in winter or during a molt?

Egg production slows naturally in fall and winter as daylight decreases, and again briefly when hens molt and replace their feathers. We don't use artificial lighting to force production, so our supply mirrors the season — abundant in spring and summer, lighter in fall and winter. During slow periods we notify our regulars first and post current availability so you don't drive out to an empty cooler..
